And quite honestly, I'm inclined to agree.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

No offense to the Ecoboost engines or Ford, they're nice mills with tons of torque, I like my FoST, and then when you tune them, oh mah lawd! But god damn, is it damn near impossible to get EPA averages with these cars, even driving unethusiastically/without a purpose lightly.

For the sake of science, I tried driving without boosting or in the lower rpms and granny shifting and following the shift light on my FoST with a full tank for two weeks; mostly city and some highway, but the city roads were all very long straights with very little stop-n-go.

EPA estimates are as follows for the FoST:

23/32/26 combined

I averaged 23.2, what the hell is this??

Let me get this straight, I drove like an boring fart for two weeks and couldn't even get closer than that...WOW!

Not only that, almost seems a number of the FoST owners on the forums can attest to poor MPGs as well.

This is part of the reason I'm not very inclined to believe that FI engines are truly the future for the fuel economic world. I mean, I accept it for what it is, but it only seems to serve as a gimmick to play the EPA with fake numbers on paper, and not even come close in the real world.

How do they even do MPG tests, the EPA?

ST owners, or FI engined car owners in general, what's up with this? Anyone wanna weigh in on this subject?

I had a BMW 120d for a week and met and exceeded the EU cycle figures (something most americans think is optimistic) I got over 56 MPG (US) combined versus a quoted highway 55MPG

Highway mileage was much better than city of course. I had it on paper a while ago, but I lost it when I cleaned out my dorm. I know for a fact that I never got 32MPG though, I usually am doing 75-80 and I leave cruise control on. Probably mid-high 20s.

I think that Eco-Boost is more about churning out the most horsepower from the smallest displacement. Not using the least fuel for the most amount of horsepower.

In my TSI I get a lot closer to the EPA ratings though.

Kinja'd!!!1

Sorry, I shouldn't have hijacked this with F&F jokes, but to your topic: How early are you getting into the upper gears? The EPA mileage likely has the car into at least 5th by no more than 40mph, using large throttle openings to reduce pumping losses, while controlling output with timing & boost control. That's what electronic throttles help most with from an emissions standpoint. You might think you're at 50% throttle, but it's open more than that & is giving you the requested output by other means. Also, winter mileage isn't really a direct comparison, because colder, more dense air requires more fuel to combust. Great for power, bad for economy.

Then maybe they should stop saying the "the most fuel efficient trucks in the class" when they get the same exact mileage as a 6.2 SBC under normal driving conditions. At least the Ram's 3.0L diesel could have an actual claim being as diesels usually get better mileage.

1. It's winter. MPG drops quite a bit in the cold.

2. You said you drive 75-80 on the highway. The EPA tests at either 55 or 65 mph, I can't remember which. Fuel economy drops drastically as your speed increases over 55 mph. At 55 I get over 40 mpg in the FiST. At 75 I get 33-34 mpg.

With that being said, I've averaged about 28 mpg during my 5 months of ownership. It's rated at 26-35. My worst tank to date is 16.8. My best tank is 40.5 mpg.
